But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
–Â Luke 14:10-11
Jesus uses a simple dinner scene to teach a deep truth: when we resist the urge to promote ourselves and instead take the lowly place, we open the door for God to lift us. Humility isn’t self‑deprecation but trust, trust that God sees, values, and will honor what we quietly do for others. Practically, this looks like listening more, praying and thanking God for His food, serving without seeking credit, and letting God shape our reputation and reward. Live small before people so God can make you great in His presence.
Dear Blessed Lord Jesus, give me a humble heart and the courage to serve without seeking praise. Help me to choose the low place, to love others well, and to trust Your timing when You lift me up. Make my motives pure and my life a quiet witness to Your grace. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Your Mighty Precious Name Jesus Amen.
