“It is the spirit that quickened” life comes from the Spirit; spiritual reality gives true life. “The flesh profited nothing,” mere physical needs, biological life, or human effort cannot produce the deeper life Jesus offers. “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life” Jesus identifies his teaching as the vehicle of Spirit-given life, not just moral instruction.
