{Let’s Pray: Father God, I am believing for this message to touch someone’s heart today. Guiding and giving of ourselves through Your word in Jesus Precious Name Amen.
Jesus took the bread, gave thanks and gave the bread to the people inviting them to take as much as they needed. Jesus once said that he came so that we may have life and life in abundance, and this is so evident in this miracle: Everybody ate as much as they wanted, and there were twelve baskets of leftovers, much more than the amount they started with. This reminds me of the extravagant quantity of water turned into wine at Cana: Prophecies are fulfilled, the water-pots are full; but that the water may be turned into wine, Christ must be understood in that whole prophecy. (Tractates on John 9.6) And in popular preaching, this symbolic number is hard to resist. Six stone jars with 20 to 30 gallons of wine in them total 120 to 180 gallons. Jesus made nearly 1,000 bottles of wine! By all accounts, this is a lot of wine for a wedding of this size. Furthermore, John tells us this was his first sign in Galilee, and it manifested his glory, John ch.2. I consider how God in Jesus is generous beyond more than I could ever do. It is a lot of time and patients to make bread loaves and be able to share in my own life. I ask for the grace of gratitude. This message of Jesus reaches into the depths of all people, into those places of life where we dance and sing, laugh and cry, mourn and despair, hope and love, and where everything deeply dwells within our powerful mind and heart. Jesus also pours the living water into that space and speaks an eternal word. Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand. Sometime after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the miracle. In believing we can say ‘we have the message of eternal life.
Let’s read: John chapter 6:1-15
After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him, there is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So, the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore, they gathered them together and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, this is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.
