God made the promise to King David and his descendants that David’s throne would be established forever. After bringing the ark of the covenant into Jerusalem and there was peace in the land David had it in his heart to build a house for the Lord, but through the prophet Nathan God told David not to build a house for God at that time. Psalm 132 has strong historical implications with regard to the Davidic Covenant (compare 2 Sam. 7:10-14,Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house. And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: 16; Psalms 89; 132:10-11), and pronounced messianic and millennial overtones (Psalm 132:12-18). Essentially, this psalm contains the nation’s prayers for David’s royal descendants which look ahead, even to Messiah.Verse 16. But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.
Psalm chapter 132:1-18
Lord, remember David, and all his afflictions: How he swore unto the LORD, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob; Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed; I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids, Until I find out a place for the LORD, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob. Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah: we found it in the fields of the wood. We will go into his tabernacles: we will worship at his footstool. Arise, O LORD, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength. Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints shout for joy. For thy servant David’s sake turn not away the face of thine anointed. The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne. If thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne for evermore. For the LORD hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation. This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it. I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread. I will also clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy. There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed. His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.
{Prayer}
“Father God, I thank You and praise You for the song of forgiveness in Psalm 131. I thank You and praise You that You humble all Your children from our inside voice to our outside voice. I thank You and praise You that You humble us sometimes away from this world, so we can be stilled in You and recognize how we have really ignored You. Thank You that You put us in this closed seems like a closet we can’t open. But I realize I need to be still to really repent of my sins to You and really know that You are going through it all with me. That no weapon formed against me shall prosper as long as I stay in constant communion with You. Staying in contact and repenting starts and ends with You. I thank You and praise You that You are my best friend. You go always where I do. Amen! Help me to realize that you long to dwell in me always. There is nothing that I can do, make or create that will take your ‘longing for me’ away. By accepting that you love me and acknowledging that you are Lord of my life, I am preparing a place for you. Not just in my quiet time, but in my ‘every’ time. I invite you to share everything I do and say today. You are the Mighty One. Thank You for Your church that is Your sanctuary. I love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Jesus Precious Name Amen.
